91% of Herriman homes were built in 2000 or later, and more than half of Riverton's (Source: U.S. Census ACS). Newer construction changes the mitigation picture in a few specific ways:
- Passive radon pipes are voluntary in Utah (Source: Utah Code 15A-3-206), so some newer homes have one and many don't. If yours does and tests at 4 or higher, EPA says adding a fan is easy (Source: EPA). More on new construction.
- Builder warranties: if your home is only a year or two old, ask your builder whether radon is covered before hiring anyone. Answers vary, so get it in writing.
- Finished basements and tight lots make an exterior pipe run on a side yard a common choice. Routing and cost.
- New homes need a test after you move in, even if built radon-resistant (Source: EPA).
